Is it legal to own a Squirrel Monkey?

I want to know if it’s legal to own a Common Squirrel Monkey. I have a friend who is buying one and I never knew you could. I figured it had to be one of those monkey helpers for the disabled but she said no. I live in Wisconsin and I know that the rules can be different depending on where you live in a state but I wanted to know if anyone knows anything about it.
PS: I know if I was able to get one it would be best suited in an environment that would fit it in the wild. I wouldn’t buy a monkey and have him/her live in my room because I think that’s unnatural.

Yes…you can own a squirrel monkey as a pet.
But why does your friend want a squirrel monkey…?
they probably are one of the worst pet monkeys..
I would only recommend a Tamarin or a Capuchin monkey as a pet…from personal experience.
I currently own 2 cotton top tamarins, and 1 white faced capuchin.
I live in Ohio.

I don’t think Wisconsin currently has any restrictions on pet primates, but your town or city may have it’s own laws. Try going to your town’s website and looking it up.
