i don’t know all of the laws concerning monkeys, i don’t know what you have to do to buy them. If there’s some sort of license that would be great, cause then i wouldn’t have to buy illegal monkeys, and it would probably cost less. Plus that would help me in knowing how to take care of them.
Allison thank you that was something, but i don’t need answers like nekkiddoglady. look i’ve done the research and thought about it for several years to make sure this was the right decision. i don’t need somebody telling me the down side, i know that already. look i’m a redneck through and through, i’m gouig to school to be a paramedic, you can’t gross or freak me out; nothing like that bothers me. i don’t need any ippl or peta answers, that doesn’t impress me. I’m not an environmentalist, i hunt, fish, eat animals, and emit carbon without a second thought; so don’t give me any feel good answers.
p.s. how do i check state and local ordinances.
you do not want a pet monkey. They are nasty, filthy animals and do not make good pets.
The jokes about flinging poo are true.. they also will smear it everywhere.. cage bars, the wall, etc. They also become agressive as they mature. Its not something you can "train out of them".. its part of their social status and the way they communicate. Monkies can do alot of damage too. They also carry nasty diseases, including hepatitis, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.
To obtain a pet monkey, and infant is taken away from its mother. Monkies are intelligent and have strong maternal instincts. That is just cruel and wrong, simply so someone can have a cute pet.
Monkies are a 20-30 year commitment. If you cannot handle the care and problems that come with a monkey, do not get one! There is nowhere for a monkey to go when you decide you no longer want it as a pet. No one else is able to take it, because they cannot handle it either, zoos do not want them.. they were not raised with other monkies and dont know how to interact with them.

You need to check city and state ordinances before you do anything. If you get an animal, regardless of whether you obtain it legally or not, the state or city can take it away if they are not legal in your area.
FYI, Spider monkeys do not make good pets. You might want to educate yourself more about monkeys as pets before you decide to go any further with this idea.

If I were you, to fullfill your want of a monkey, I would volenteer at a wild animal rescue or work at a zoo. I am currently a volenteer at the West Michigan SPCA, and they have a capuchin monkey there that was taken from its "owner" in a cruelty case. Monkeys are alot of work, and really don’t make good pets. The people who own the shelter have to give him constant attention and if you don’t pay attention to him, or give him what he wants when he wants it, he screams and throws a fit. If you still think you really want a "pet" monkey, then at least work with someone who has them for a while before making your decision final.
