How do I get rid of monkey grass?

Posted by admin on February 10th, 2010 and filed under monkey | 5 Comments »

I have a border of monkey grass that keeps sprouting new and spreading. I want to dig it up and plant flowers instead. Any tips on how to remove completely? Is it just a matter of digging it up from the root?

Spray RoundUp on it. RoundUp goes through the leaves, down the stems and into the roots to kill the whole plant. You might have to wait a week and then spray it again. The hotter the weather, the faster it will work. After you have removed the dead plants, you might see a few start growing again. Take a paint brush of cotton swab and brush RoundUp on them. Using this method will keep the RoundUp off your other flowers.

Monkey grass is tough and invasive and is difficult to kill with herbicides. The only effective way to control it is the hard way. Soak the ground where it is growing until the earth is soft, then dig and pull until you have got rid of every piece. This is hard, tedious work but it is the only effective way of getting rid of it – sorry

Some plant nurseries need monkey grass and will be glad to dig it up for you. Check around and see.

From the root, and then there will be suckers, until you get it all! Unless you want to dig and remove like 12 in. from the place where they grow, and replace the soil.
