Am I a racist if I make a sign picturing Obama as a monkey in your opinion?

Let’s say my sign says Obama is a communist and depicts Obama as a monkey. Now how exactly is that racist?

If I make fun of the way somebody looks does that mean I’m making fun of everybody of that race?
What about all the monkey pictures of Bush or the fact Obama is half white?

No , the same thing was done in regards to Bush calling him a chimp, it could also be argued you were supporting the evolutionary theory!LOL!

    It doesn’t necessarily
but honestly, these days it kinda does.
I’ve been giving everyone the benefit of the doubt for a while now but I’ve come to find that casual, almost-unintentional racism is becoming frighteningly more prevalent in right-wing circles these days.

No question that you will be called racist. You don’t even have to put Obama on a poster. Just oppose his legislation and that’s reason enough.

Referring to a black person as a monkey will generally be seen as racist. If you want to call him a communist have him hold a hammer and sickle or something like that.

technically it would depend on why you were depicting him as a monkey…

but of course, there is a historic racist context of calling black people monkeys…

it’s just like if you say a black person likes watermelon… TECHNICALLY he could just really like watermelon… but it clearly has a racial connotation in modern society…

if I wore a hat that had a hammer and a sickle on it… am I a communist? maybe I just like hammers and sickles? it’s not technically communist…

    same arguement…

Depicting black people as monkeys is rooted in the history of racism. So most people will assume that you are being racist, something you don’t want to be accused of.

If you want to be humorous find something more original on how to depict Obama.

I thought Bush WAS a monkey. In fact I have seen more intelligent orangutans than him. So depicting Bush as a monkey would probably have been quite an accurate portrayal. I’m assuming the questioner here is intending using his own picture to replace that of Obama if he intends to portray him as a monkey.

Why a monkey, though? You know it is racially charged. You don’t care and use it anyway which suggests, to me, that you are focusing on racial hatred towards the President.

Yes, there is a historic representation of race in this nation that has negative depictions of people of color and monkeys. We also had a historic precedent with the Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson that if you are 1/7th black in this nation we see you as black rather than any other race.

So, this sounds to me like a petulant child rather than one who is willing to fully examine the history of race in the US.

the only people who think a picture of Obama as a monkey is racist, are racists themselves.

people who AREN’T racists are equal opportunity offenders.

yeah, that seems backwards, but think about it. it’s true. it’s only when you DON’T care what color someone is that you feel free to insult them.

I get your point, and there is some shred of validity to it. We live in a day and age where political correctness is both biased and out of control…

But, there is a line to be crossed and i think you’re crossing it… Racism can be described as the belief that a certain race portrays undesirable characteristics, in particular the way they look. I don’t know anyone that thinks looking like a monkey is desirable so yes, it is racist. No matter if it’s Obama or Bush..

As far as portraying Obama as a Commie, as far as i’m concerned that is not racist. Political affiliation has nothing to do with race…

No, not if your intent was to portray him as monkeying around with the Constitution or figuratively as out of control "a monkey at the wheel" and not literally comparing him to a monkey. Regardless of your intentions, others would perceive you as a racist. You would then be guilty of using emotion rather than reason in a counterproductive effort to express your disagreement with his destructive policys like so many on the left are apt to do.

The left uses charges of racism as a political club, not out moral indignation as they would have you believe. Like violence, this bleating of "Racism!" is the last refuge of the incompetent. Note how they quietly embrace a court case like Plessy v. Ferguson as it allows them to use this contemptible practice in many more situations than would otherwise be the case. The false charge of racism is hate speech disguised as moral superiority, used by those with a delusion of moral high ground.

    Racist, no; childish, perhaps.

IMO, I wonder why one would use a monkey for Obama when there are so many other choices, i.e., a Hitler-nazi mustache, a kremlin hat, a Che Guevera bandanna, a hammer and sickle tee shirt, bowing toward Mecca, etc……….?

    It’s all subjective.

I thought the GWB monkey caricatures were childish. Obama is half white but he plays it down by choice.

No, but it is species discrimination from the monkey’s point of view. And incidentally, we all look like monkeys. There’s only 3% difference there. I resemble a snow monkey.

Do not think it is racist but think such depictions of Bush or Obama or anyone are just rude. Not funny. Satire has its boundaries too. I do not view Obama has being black but just a darker shade of pale.

Actually when he panders to his Black audience he speaks that way but when he panders to the Whites he presents himself as an intellectual. I prefer sincerity and speaking from ones heart
    and not ones skin tone.
