Are you aware that monkeys can carry the AIDES virus? It can be dormant in their system for a long time and in the meantime they have scratched you, bit you and everthing else.....Also the older they get the more aggressive they get...it is something to think about. I am not saying to NOT get a monkey but you REALLY need to do your research on any animal that you may want as a pet...even cats and dogs....you need to know what their requirements are, both nutritionally, socially and physically. The more exotic the pet the more requirements....Also if you still want a monkey....contact a zoo who can give you a reliable trader and give you an inside scoop on their care and even if your state, region or city will allow you to have such an exotic pet. You may have to get an exotic pet liscense. Hope I have been of some help. Good luck in your search.
References :
Personal experience and best friend was a zoo keeper.

Do you have a permit? contact a pet store and ask them where to look.
References :
http://www.monkeysanctuary.org/adopt.asp you can help save the life of a monkey in your area until you can buy one yourself.

You are not suitable company for one of these animals, so you must keep two. Plus you must provide suitable accomodation and care.
They look cute in photos but the reality of living with them is very different.
Both are climbing animals and will literally have a nervous breakdown if you force them to live on the ground.
Spider monkeys are brachiating monkeys, like gibbons. You cannot keep a spider monkey in a small cage.
Please do some research into both these species to find out what they need. Never mind about what you want to keep as a pet, the first question to ask yourself is 'what do I have to offer this species as an owner?' and 'why would this animal want to give up its life to live with me as my pet?'
References :
By a book and look at the pictures. Get a wildlife DVd or video.
Visit the zoo. If you can ever afford go on a holiday where you can see these animals in the wild. Leave them where they belong.
References :
My Opinion

Please look on this website www.monkeyworld.co.uk and you will see why you are not allowed them. check out the World Wildlife Fund as well, I presume this must be a joke?

The monkeys are taken from the wild which is really cruel and then shipped to idiots that can't look after them and then they end up at places like Monkey World.
References :
Marmosets you don't need a licence for, but spider monkeys you do and you need to have it before you buy one. They are not animals to be kept alone so you need at least two. You need to have seperate quarters for them and be inspected on a regular basis.
References :
Chewlips - why do you want to keep an animal so clearly designed for the wild, in a cage in your garden? Are you qualified to look after such an animal? Do you have the proper facilities?

There probably a reason why they don't sell them in Petworld... and as with most animals, if you don't know what you're doing, it could escape, climb into you house, urinate on all your linen and eat your curtains... now that WOULD be a shame...

Have you thought about a goldfish?
References :
And you'll be keeping it in a cage no doubt, as it certainly won't be allowed access to the garden. Maybe keep it on a chain in the garden, and add a few branches to his cage so you can kid yourself its 'just like his real inhabitat'. Don't think about the animal at all, after all, you and what you want are far more important. As long as you get your monkey in its cage, that's all that matters.
