You first have to make sure that you are the right person for a monkey. The most common species of monkey kept is the capuchin all though spider monkeys and macaques are also commonly kept. Here are some site that may help.

No and monkeys aren`t pets, they are social animals who need to live in a group. Please think about a more suitable pet.

put yourself in a cage and see how you get on….
I get angry with humans who think they can put anything in a cage for personal entertainment….
A pet should be a domesticated animal…..Please do not buy a monkey just to give yourself pleasure…
THINK about it…. and imagine it to be the other way round…

Although I disagree with most other people’s answers that monkeys are "bad" pets, I do believe they are illegal as pets in the UK. I would check with the Agriculture departmnet first to be sure. I live in the US so I am not to familiar with how your laws work. It is not monkeys that are the problem, but people who acquire them without any knowledge of their care.
I do have 2 pet squirrel monkeys, so I speak from experience. When raised in the proper atmosphere, constant companionship, proper diet, large enclosures, enrichment etc… they can be wonderful pets. I recommend you do A LOT of research on their care before you get one, because they are A LOT of work. Much more so than a dog. My squirrels are the light of my life, and I will be getting 2 capuchins in the future.
My site has information on what it really takes to own one. http://www.petmonkeyinfo.com
