So you want to own a monkey for a pet? They are cute, fun, look like little people and it would be great to hold them and cuddle them. But in all honesty, monkeys are nothing like that! Here are some facts about what it is like owning a monkey.
In most provinces in Canada, primates are illegal to own. Please check your provinces Wildlife Act or contact your local Fish & Wildlife Department.
If you live in Saskatchewan all primates are illegal to own. If you live in Alberta all primates are illegal to own except the Common Marmoset Monkey.
If you care caught in any province with illegal posession of a primate it may eventually lead to death for your monkey.
Primates range in cost of about $2,000.00-$50,000.00 per monkey, depending on the species, and are very rare in Canada which makes a breeder harder to find.
Extensive research should be done prior to making the decision to own a primate as they require special care and are extremely high maintenance as pets.
Primates should never be fed table foods as their main dietary source. They require specialized primate diets; plus fruits and veggies daily. Special foods must be ordered and cannot be purchased in a pet store. If an unfit diet is provided it will soon result in death!
They require a UVB light source, plenty of natural sunlight, high doseages of vitamins (most supplied in primate foods) and a heat source to stay healthy. They do not survive our Canadian winters without proper shelter from the harsh elements.
Primates can be extremely smelly from natural body odors and some primates are worse than others, like the Common Marmoset Monkey.
They are very social and intelligent animals and should be provided with lots of entertainment. If bored, lonely, abused or neglected they will self mutilate such as chewing off their own tail and other limbs, over grooming and hair loss to name a few.
Should be housed in a "monkey proof" enclosure with more than enough space to play, explore and must be housed indoors with outdoor access on warm days.
If you cannot spend much time with your primate it is highly recommended to keep two, which in the end can cost $4,000.00-$100,000.00 or more, depending on the species, housing, food, veterinarian costs and more.
Primates are extremely territorial, even towards their owners. They will attack people they do not know so it is not recommended to allow contact with your family and friends living outside the home.
Primates can contract human diseases and viruses such as the common cold, cold sores, measles, etc. and will be dead within a day or two after contracting the disease.
Owning a monkey if you have children is not recommended as kids are regularly sick with colds, flu, chicken pocks, measles and will transfer the disease to the monkey.
Monkeys rank the people in their family so children will be on the bottom of the rank and will be subject to frequent attacks. They will fight children for mom and dads attention.
All primates, male or female, will masturbate anywhere, anytime and in front of anyone.
Primates have a long lifespan and depending on the species, can live over 50 years old. So, the decision to own one should be a decision for the monkeys life.
Please think about the reality of owning a primate. A primate will not fit into your lifestyle; you must change your life to fit into a primates lifestyle!

I Don’t Know Where But You Have A MONKEY! Awsome Dude
It is possible to potty train it, but it is rather difficult, so you would most likely have to have it wear diapers.
I don’t know but usually hair falls out from rubbing or excessive grooming which is caused by anxiety so make sure he isnt stressed out. Where did you get a monkey by the way? I want a marmoset, they are the cute small ones right?
Monkies are NOT good pets! They may be intelligent.. but that actually makes them very complex little creatures!
For one, they are aggressive.. they bite, scratch, pinch, hit, slap, etc.. you cannot "train it out of them".. its part of their social structure and how they communicate. Some monkey owners had to be hospitalized because they recieved serious injuries from their pets! It doesnt matter what home they are in.. even people who are experienced with monkies still suffer injuries! Even the most affectionate monkies are still aggressive!
Monkies are very dirty animals. They cannot be housebroken or potty trained. You cant expect them to keep a diaper on either. They are notorious for smearing and throwing food and poop.
Monkies can also carry very nasty diseases, including HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, Herpes, etc. Some of these can be passed along from a bite!
Monkies need special care.. they require special diets, stocking up on bannanas will not be enough! They also need routine veterinary care.. and zoonotic vets do not come cheap! They need constant supervision and mental stimulation.. a bored monkey can be very dangerous and destructive!
These creatures can live well over 25 years.. some live over 40 years, depending on the specie. This animal is a life-time commitment. You cannot just get rid of your monkey when you tire of it, nor will you be able to leave it in someone else’s care if you want to go on vacation. They rarely adapt to another family, even with someone experienced with primates. Zoos also do NOT take people’s unwanted pets.. as they often lack the social skills to integrate them with the other primates.
I dont think a monkey can even be compared to an infant.. I think an infant would be far easier to take care of!

Marmosets are not monkeys. They are prosimians.
The fact that you don’t know this tells me that you do not know nearly enough about primates to take decent care of them.
Primates are not pets, nor should they ever be. Go buy a stuffed animal instead and please find an alternate way to be kewl and different.
where can i get little marmoset monkey’s for cheap?

Marmoset’s are illegal in the state of Pennsylvania and most other states. Please check your laws and regulations before even thinking about purchasing one. I wanted one too, and I did my homework.
In the government listings in your phone book, call the USDA (US Dept of Agriculture). You should have received one with the purchase of your monkey from the breeder or shipper.
